Task 1:
The topic that I choose for task 1 is “THIRTY-SOMETHING”.
The phrase, ‘Thirty-something’ had many meaning. First, it refers to people of an unspecified age between 30 and 40. It means the people who were born 20, 30 years before. Then, it was the name of a film. Next, it used as an adjective- ‘she’s a thirty something career woman’. And it also used as a noun – ‘the thirty something’. Well, it can be any age. The implication is always that there’s a set of values or problems associated with that age. For Prof. David Crystal, he is sixth-something. Me? I’m twenty-something!!

The new word I get from this topic:-
1. Cope – to deal successfully with something.
2. Gloom – a feeling of deep sadness.
3. Implication – a suggestion not expressed but understood



Task 2:
Another topic that I choose for task 2 is“IN YOUR DREAM!”
The word “In your dream” meant someone is being unrealistic, very optimistic and very hopeful. Dream is what happens when we’re asleep, and the sense of day dream. It likes a condition that which is expected. In the topic, Prof David Crystal was said that there had many people make the day dream when they are at the different situation like in a traffic jam (car) or they let them going for a part of movie. All of these just a dream. We must work hard if want it to be the truth. So, if you are in a dream, please remember muttering yourself, ‘In My Dream!!’…

The new word I get from this topic:-
1. Circumstances - a fact, condition, or event concerned with and influencing another event, person, or cause of action.
2. Expectations – the condition of expecting; that which is expected.
3. Reverie – (a state of) pleasant thoughts and dreams while awake.

I would like to write my opinion on the online listening practice for the task 2. For the second task I choose another topic, ‘cell’. Compared to the first listening activity this time I can catch up by what I listen. Even though I manage to understand by what they saying but sometimes I had a difficulty to pronounce some words .For example the words like synchoronise and monastery are very hard to pronounce. I also learned some new vocabulary through this topic. Through this website I recalled how to spell some words like synchoronise, where I have heard before but don’t know how to spell it. Other than that, I’m still having difficulties in pronouncing some words properly as how in this website. I will try my best to pronounce all the words that I’ve learned in this website.

Hello everybody here I’m just wanted to share with all of you about my experience in assignment 2 for the task 1 from Prof. David Crystal website. I had chosen the topic about the "cell". Seriously, for the first time I heard the recording, I didn’t understand anything. I can't catch up every single word that he said, I ask myself, what was he say? Then, I tried hearing for the second time. This time, there was a bit improvement because I can catch up a bit words, and start understand what he's trying to tell the entire listener. Then, I hear for the third time with read the transcript. This time I can understand the whole of story. Actually it was about the cellular phone, but after shortened, it became cell phone. For me, it is not easy to understand what people trying to tell us if they come from other country especially people who's came from United Kingdom and America because their slang was very different compared to our slang. I think, this website is very good for the students who want to improve their English especially in the listening skill and also for the beginning learner of English Language. So, I will always use this website to improve my English, and hopefully, it will help me a lot. Thank You...

I read one more topic in BBC. I choose ‘Out’ as my topic.It was talked about bad things and homosexual. In UK, homosexual was accepted by all people even the legal. It was different with our country. Like in Malaysia. But in this topic, I just listened once because I can understand it easily. To make me more understand, I read the tape script and listened again, I found there were some words that I don’t know the meaning. It was 'flurry' and 'activists'. Finally, I finished my job. For me, online listening have many advantages because it can improve my English in writing, listening and reading.

Hyep everyone... see me again... My hometown Muar, Johor and my village is Kampung Sri Jaya. Thats is my grandfather and grandmother's house. But now, i live in Sg Buloh, Selangor. I LOVE ENGLISH... I found english very intersting because cartoon i watched was in english. But my english not well, so i start to tuition class when i primary five. Because of tuition class, i had improve and pass the UPSR. When i enter secondary school, i stopped to tuition class. But then i got A in english, PMR. Amazing. That i only study english when in english class. As time go longer, when i form five, i found english become difficult for me. This is because i less read book in english or english newspaper and very less speak english, so when exam i only can get pass. During matriculation, i got band two in MUET. So in this class, i try to improve my english. Teacher said only read more can improve english, so let us read more english story book...

I already listen to david crystal today.I have listen about dating.Interesting topic.Firsty i listen,so hard for me to catch what it say.but after i listen 3 times i can understand more.After that,I read the tapescript and learn again,so easy to understant now.However, dating does have it's positive side effects as well. In conclusion, dating is an activity only truly appreciated by those who are not doing it.I also learn new word like metaphorically,new goldfish and a vicious cycle.I don't understant so much thier meaning,but i know the word have meaning in dating topic.I will reading and learn more to improve my vocabulary.

all activities in class i like,but the most activity i like is drama class.i very enjoyed it.

Today English is the most important language that we must learn it more. English is totally different with in our ‘Bahasa Malaysia’.I have been learning English since I was in primary school but still now I often make terrible mistakes (sometimes, very embarrassing) and get confused how to use my English properly. I really would like to improve my English, but I have difficulties how to study efficiently by myself. However since I was enter my foundation English classes I get my performance have improve properly.

My performance in English in:

READING

• In ice-breaking activity have a lot of section reading articles. In this section I get more information and I also can improve my comprehensive.
• Actually I like this part because I enjoy when I was read something. However it made me not fun to read it when it has some words that I can’t understand. So it makes me to check their meanings in the dictionary. I usually can remember that words when had check it. So it gives me a new vocabulary that I had known it.

LISTENING

• I can listen in English properly but some time I can’t listen it clearly. This is because in English their pronunciation of many words almost same even their meaning are different. I also don’t understand it if someone had talking with fast and had used the words that I don’t know. So what I do it to solve this problem, is just ask that person to repeat again their information and listen it again likes in assignment 2, listen on the learning English pages.

SPEAKING

• Sometime I like to speak in English and sometime I am opposite. I don’t know why, maybe it is affected from friends. Before this I had try to speak in English with my friends but what I got it, they were laugh at me. This case which likes this can make I lost of my confidence to speaking it with well.
• But I don’t give up to try it again cause I’m know I’m still in learning processes and should be improve my skill in English soon. Hence, I’m fill not too shy to speak in English either they were correct or not. In this class teacher ask us to be brave to speaking in English. Be confident and try to say it with correct pronunciation.

VOCABULARY

• I know, I’m weaker in vocabulary. This is because have a lot of words that I don’t understand it either in section of listening or speaking. I also usually use the same words repeatedly.
• However since I was in class foundation, I always get a new vocabulary from our activities classes. Now I had learn more about vocabulary.

MAKING PRESENTATION

• Before this I was to shy and nervous to speck in front of people. It’s because I know I can’t speck well especially at part of pronunciation. I also do not know how to make nice sentences. I just use simple sentences that are not suitable at my age. All of this reason make I lost of my confidence to making presentation. However since I had make presentation I feel a little brave to do it. It was fun actually. Just be confidence what are you want to present it.

PARTICIPATING IN DISCUSSION

• This activity is interesting because it can make our relationship more closes. It also can form a co-operation between each others. From that discussion it was teach me to think for make and give good ideas.
  

This course has improve my English in reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, making presentation, and in participaing in group discussions.. Here , I wanna tell some of my achievements in learning English....

*reading: I think i've got improve my reading skill. I had read some story book. I read it until I finish it. Then if there's soething words that i don't know or 1st time I see it, i will underline it and search what does it meaning exactly. I also tried to play the bookworm's game that Madam Michi had suggest us to play. What a Nice game!

*writing: I had improve my writing skill, especially in this blog.. If, there's no blog, i think i didn't have a chance to try to practice my writing skill.

*listening: i'm quite weak in listening... I'm always got a low marks in listening in my Longman...huhuhuhu.... But actually I can understand easily what does it said, but i jut cant catch where is the words that is streesed.

*speaking: Here I can improve my speaking in our class project where we need to speak in a right pronounciation and also in Longman. Madam Michi also always teach us how to pronounce a words correctly.

*vocabulary: I have rised my vocabulary collection... Especially when we learn about Princess Diana. Even the words that is used is not in a high level, but I still have some words that I cannot understand.. But, after has been make some discussion with my friend or take a look at the dictionary, i've found the meaning......

*making presentation: Alhamdulillah... Ive made it! I a little bit nervous at the 1st time, after i got an attention from my fellow friend, I become more excited to present it more better and I lost my nervous... hehehehe...

*participating in group discussion: In all group discussion, if I'm not mistaken, I had give my ideas even not much, but I still give. We could see here that we in a one group could communicate and accept other's ideas. Not selfish..

Activities that I:

Like: I like all the activity that we are already done.
Especially in reading Princess Diana and drama. This is because Princess Diana is such a best story book and I could learn some English culture and learn about British's Royal family.
And for drama , this is because we had win as the winner!!!!!!!

After i had finished foundation English class, I've learned many new things from madam Michi especially when we discussed about Lady Diana story.Besides, my imrovement into:

reading : I love to read many english book from now on but it depends on which book i choose. Actually, i preferred to read ghost story..hehe

writing : I'm still not good enough in writing, but I will do my best to improve my writing.

listening : This improved after i've done the Longman's activities, most of the words I can catched up.

speaking : I can speaking in English fluently after done the Longman's activities. It's proved when I've done the presentation.

vocabulary : I had learned a lot new vocab and at that time i knew that the simple word had many different meanings not only just 1 meaning at 1 word.

making presentations : At first, I'm too nervous while presented but when i made an eye contact with my classmate I can decreased my nervous perfectly.

participating in group discussion : We communicated successful with each others so that we got the best answer for all problems that we all had to solved.

I think all the activities had we done in the class are enjoyable and this 'because of you' madam michi.

After i finished this foundation english, I got a lot of improvement in my English. For example, in

reading: I don't like to read English book anymore.But now, I'm so happy to read the book because I can understand more than before.
writing: Now, I can write better because I had some new vocabulary and many skills from teacher. That's so easy for me to make some writing.
listening: After I joined the Longman's activities, I can more understand what they're talking about ecspecially when talk with foreigners.
speaking: Before this, I'm so shy to speak in English because I'm so afraid if they were laugh to me. But now, I can speak more fluent and enjoyed it. I also practice it with my friends.

Today I listened to Professor David Crystal's audio tittle "WUSS". I heard it twice and here, there are some new word that I dont't know with their meaning that I would like to share with others.
~ ineffectual>> not producing the effect or result that you want (tidak berjaya)
~ indecisive>> not able to make decisions easily (teragak-agak membuat keputusan)
~ etymology>> the studies of the origins and history of words and their meaning (kajian asal usul)
~ wimp>> a weak person who has no courage or confidence (pengecut)

Today, I browsed to Internet and enter to BBC. I choose one topic randomly which is title ‘Cell’. This topic was talked about mobile phone. Mobile phone also known as cell phone. In this modern world, cell phone used ordinary by every people. It helps us more in our routine work. When I started listened to the topic, I can’t hear very clear. After two times I listened to the script, I just understand a little bit. I just can followed it when i read the article. Overall, I can understand the script when I read through it.I realized there were two words that I don’t know the meaning. It is ‘synchronise’ and ‘monastery’.

Reading
When I read some short article or any advertisment in english,I can understand it very well although I don't understand some meaning of the words.But, I have a problem to understand the meaning of the sentences when I'm read the long paragraph with many sentences.For example,when I'm read a english novel or story book,I need to repeat 2 or 3 times to make me understand it very well.

Writing
In the english class, I had be exposed to the skills how to arrangement of words to form a complete sentences,and when to use noun,adjective,plural and other again.Now I think I know how to do sentences better than before the foundation class.

Listening
I had a problem with myself to understand the meaning of certain english sentences.But something i can understand sentences easily.It is depends on the words that include in the certain sentences.If I don't understand one or some words meaning in that sentences,I have a problem to understand the whole sentences .I think it is because my vocabulary is not so well.So, I need to word hard and do something to make it better in the future.

Speaking
Before I attend to this class,I had so many problem with my public speaking skills and also have a problem with my pronunciation and problem with my vocabulary.After i've involved myselfwith logman activities and make some practise, I think my public speaking skills,pronunciation and also my vocabulary is better than before,as a result,I have confident to speaking in english.

Vocabulary
My vocabulary have a good improvement.Now,I know that some words is not only have one meaning.Some words have a same spelling but they have different meaning.Other than that, i'm have make an improvement in my pronunciation of the english words.As the result, the combination between a good vocabulary and also the good pronunciation make me more confident to speaking in english a using it as my second language.

Making presentations
I were nervous when presentations.Because I not confident I can do the best.I think I not do very good presentation.But after presentation,I am sure I can do more good after that.

For example likes the words 'mortgage', 'cheeky', 'shrug off ', 'fray', and 'astonishing'. Then after I had listen it twice by checked it with the typescript, I got it more understood in the overall of this story. I also tried to compare my pronunciation with the actual typescript, I got it had a lot of different in my pronunciation before. This page gives a lot of information how to learn English. I learn how to say it with the right pronunciation. It also tells me about how to understand conversation from someone likes:

• Focus when someone wants to say something.
• Give an attention in their information.
• Listen it with clearly.

hello everybody...
i'm just leason to the Prof David Crystal's spoke,i choose topic "out" ,that is a simple word but has a deepmeaning.At the first time i listen to the Professor Crystal, i really don't know what he was talking about.But i try to listen again and it was also difficult to understand unless i refer to text. after liste and look at the text, just can't believeble it was talking about the person who was have a identicaly problem. It was a homosexual usually a public figure. The text is easy to understand but i found some word that i don't understand like a "flurry,broadening" and i try to find the meaning in the dictionary. I also learn how to pronounce te word rightly. Lastly, i feel very enjoy to learn about this topic and will continue another topic after this. Bye...

Wow, yesterday was our lucky day because we had get first prizer in drama contest. I'm proud all of you because had give the best acting for our drama. I'm so surprise when we were announcement as the winner, although our prop are simple then others group. This is because we enjoyed the drama and had give the best co-operation. David Crystal is on of the world’s foremost expert on language.
I think everyone must be came in website and try listen, read and make exercise in the website because it is very good for improve your English. I got many new vocabulary when I log on in the website such as:

1. Bling = Used to describe diamond and jewellery and all kind of showy clothing.

1. reading: I can read very well but sometimes not easy to interpret the meaning. I often find out in dictionary which word I don't understand. For example, Princess Diana book. At first reading, I just know a little because the arrangement not follow the chronology and use some palace words.
2. writing: I can't write very well. It's too difficult to me to arrange some word to make story. But now, I feel more confident to write anything than before. I think this is because I always write down an article in "blog".
3. listening: I can't catch up if the sound too fast and use some word which I never listen before. I always refer dictionary and listen for second time. After that I will understand.
4. speaking: I can speak English but not fluently. I felt I knew but at the same time it's to difficult to speak. But everyday I try speak English with my friend. Although I don't know whether it's true or not but I still speak. So, I felt more confident later.
5. vocabulary: Everyday I do Longman Interactive exercise, so my vocabulary seems good not before.
6. making presentations: When I presented I felt not confident. If I forgot one word, I will read and see the article thoroughly.
7. participating discussions: It's good exercise where I can ask my friend which part I don't understand. Like class drama, it's not just give improvement in our English but it's close linkage to us.

For this task, i had choused pop-star-the new fashion designer by prof. David Crystal’s all of you said, it’s quite hard to understand. At least I must hear the record for 3 times to understand about that whole topic. The new vocabularies I had learned in this topic are:

2. A stab to get a bit of longevity – an attempt to make your career last longer.
3. To cut out the middle-man – to sell directly to your costumer.

English make me nervous, it always makes me in dilemma, confuse and trouble cause of my vocabulary and grammar is too weak. I got nothing after learnt it from primary school until now because I don’t like language. It makes me too difficult to speak in English but when I enter university, now I know it important to me.

However, when the class started me so nervous what goner happen but I will try. The success didn’t come if we don’t work on it. Our class’s teachers, Madam Michi always give the exact example for the sentences and word that difficult to understand. But I don't know why I could not improve until now???May be I need a friend that can always talk in English or work hard on it. However, as a science student, I must get it by myself.

When in discussion group I too shy to speak like gold in my mouth. I have idea but don’t know how to talk. Some times I didn't understand what to do.

For Madam Michi thanks a lot for teaching me about english skills and thanks for the script that you made for our drama. I proud am one of set 31 members and thanks to all group members because give attention and try hard in our drama.

TASK 2

I was listening David Crystal in Learning English. It's quite easy for me to understand the words. At the first time I heard that i'm not really understand what he talked about. But i listen it again. Then, I read the transcript. I choose the word "NOT" because i always used this word in my daily life. I had learn that is unusual to put the word "not" at the end, instead of in the middle. Word "not" actually emphasising or refer to the negative opinion. It's usually used after an opposite point of view.

I also had learn new words such as abbreviation, emphasising & negate.
So, i will learn more English language from David Crystal Learning English.

TASK 1

I was listening to David Crystal just now. I choose about "blog". For me, this David Crystal is quite easy to understand. I had listened almost all, and most of them are easy for me to understand. David Crystal was right, he said that blog is just like diary writing or bulletin post. Blog is almost like a diary for those who write in it for almost everyday.

Now, I know more about the using of blog. It's not just the place that we can put everything about unsatisfied or anything that related to it, but its also one of the way to learn something from others. And start from now, let get something more benefit when writing the blog. For me, it is more to encourage me to write in English often.

Task 1:

The topic that i chose is 'Wicked'. I like this topic because I can understand what he say without see the tapescript at the first time i listend it. Althought, at the some part i can't listend properly that the words that he says. After twice, i can known all the words that he pronounce with see the tapescript. Some other words that i don't known the meaning likes youngsters,distinction and ambiguous. So that i should refered to the dictionary to find the meaning. From this listening exercise , i learn how to pronounce the words that i confuse before it. I like this exercise because i can learn more words and it can omprove m vocabulary. The sentence and the phrase that he uses are easily to understand and simple. Finally i was enjoying listening this topic.

Task 2:

Second topic that i chose is 'Get a Life'. I also like this topic very much. This topic discussion about the the meaning of the phrase 'Get a Life'. This phrase have more meanings likes your life is empty and etc. It also can use as jocular to workaholic or for anybody obsessed with something. In us it became all shorts of usage around radio,television,novels, and short stories. From this topic also,have the words that i don't known the meaning likes derogatory,unfulfilling, and etc. I was undersatnding the topic after twice i listening the topic. The phrase that he use are easily to understand and i was enjoy this listening exersice.

My Performance in English.

In reading: I was learning how to pronounce some words and I also understand the statements and the phrase that i would not known the meaning before it. I also understand all the source that teacher given especially the book of "Princess Diana" and the reading exercise that she given. Now my skills in reading are more better than before i learn foundation English.

In writing: I also improve my spelling for the words that i confuse because some words have same pronunciation but different spelling. I also learn how to use correct grammars in writing. In class also, teacher was explain about the grammars.

In listening: I also understand what was teacher saying and also understand what she teach.

In speaking: Now i can speak properly and i also have confident to speak in public and to my friends also.

In vocabulary: I also learn more words especially the book of Penguin Readers that t read. I was finished 5 books. It also help me to improve my vocabulary. Teacher also help me to improve my vocabulary because she also introduce new words in class.

Making presentation: Teacher also teach and guide my group to make presentation. She also teach me how to make the presentation interesting. From this presentation , i was learning how to speak in public.

Participating in discussion was make my friends and me to speak and take part in the group. We also can change the idea and combined ours idea to finished ours discussion. All the activity are helped me to improve my English.

All the activity that i was doing in the class i like especially drama. This is because it was the first time i take part in drama. Before it, i never do the drama either take part on the drama or in behind the scene. So i really appreciate this activity.

Assignment 2:

Task 1:
In my opinion, when I went to listen to Prof. David Crystal’s spoke, Wow, I absolute can’t understanding what does Prof. David Crystal’s spoken? Prof. David Crystal’s speak quickly and he pronunciation is very clear when he was spoke, I really cannot understand what does he spoke without the tape script although I have listen to Prof. David Crystal’s and recording many times, I just can hearing that the words I knew. But I don’t understand the content of the story. I found some words I don’t understand like fuller and texter. Then, I jot down the words I don’t know and check their meaning by using dictionary. I had learned a lot new words that I never know before. I learn much in this online learning. It’s very helpful to improve our English skill not only in listening, but also vocabulary knowledge and reading. I glad to listen to Prof. David Crystal’s spoke because I can learn to him to speak in correct pronunciation.

Task 2:
The Flat mates is the topic that I choose on the learning English page. There are 98 Episode in the story. At the beginning of listening on the online, I feel it was very difficult to me to listening well. So, I choose the easy topic-The Flat mates because this topic is like a story compared to another like a news. But, I enjoy do the online listening although it quite difficult to me to listening well without tape script. After I read the tape script and listen again, I can more understanding about the story. I do my listening practice at least 4 days. One day, I can listen at least 5-10 Episode. In my opinion, I enjoy the online listening part. It can improve my communication skill in English. We also can do it every day to learn new vocabulary and practice to speak correct pronunciation.

Task 1

I have done my online listening and writing on Prof. David Crystal’s website. I got a lot of information when I was finished to explore the website. I have chosen one topic on the website to listen and understand the whole topic is about. The topic is about ‘Get a Life’. I was found some new words when I listen and read the typescripts such as derogatory, jocular, workaholic, and usage. In my opinion based on my listening experience, it was so bad on the beginning. I can’t to understand what the Prof. David Crystal is talking about for the first time I listen him. But, I do more understand when I listen and read the typescripts at the same time. I do it for several times and this is better than before. Actually, ‘Get a Life’ is a new word from ‘life’. This word for those who feel their life is empty and alone or anybody who obsessed for something. And then, the word became all sorts of usages around radio, television, novels and short stories. That is all about the topic.

Task 2

I’m so glad after join the activity on BBC-online listening by Prof. David Crystal and I choose ‘Bless’ for my topic. Bless is a common word, right? All the religious use the word. Meanwhile, we always use the words 'Bless you!', 'Ah! Bless!', 'Ah! Bless my soul!', and 'Ah! Bless your heart!' in our life. All this words refer to a lot of categories such as when somebody says after a sneeze, to a child, parents say when a little child had a cat snuggling up to her, and so on. From the topic, I found some new words like interjection, indulgent, snuggling up and distinctive. I can’t to understand for the whole topic because I can’t to catch up all the words when I just listen for the first time. I need to do for many times. Therefore, I can be more understood either for the topic or the other one. I hope so. That is all. Thank you...

Now I continue doing my task 2. I had choosen 'BLOG' title. I can understand a bit what Prof. said. He spokes so faster that in earlier I didn't notice what he had said, but I enjoyed what he said. The new words in text I noticed was 'abbreviation', 'coinages' and 'blogarrhoea'. That's all for task 2.

First time i listen to Prof.David Crystal, i enjoy the listening about " Get a Life". I listen this topic two times because i can't catch up what they say first time. I understand what he said but when i read the transcript, I more understand what he said. In the transcript, I found some new words like jocular, derogatory and unfulfilling. Even there are some new words, I can understand what he talk about.
